Rose Park Reimagined stands as a beacon of community revitalization in Mishawaka, Indiana, exemplifying a truly vibrant, resilient, and inclusive public space. Far more than just a renovation, this ambitious project redefines the very essence of neighborhood parks, proving their potential to be dynamic hubs for social connection and environmental stewardship. The design process itself was a testament to its commitment to inclusivity, being both culturally responsive and deeply community-driven. This ensured that the park’s evolution genuinely reflected the diverse needs and aspirations of its residents.

The beauty of Rose Park Reimagined lies in its harmonious blend of historic preservation with forward-thinking modern amenities and sustainable infrastructure. Revered Work Projects Administration (WPA) era features, like the charming stone cottage and the enduring monument, have been meticulously preserved and integrated, serving as anchors to the park’s rich past. Complementing these historic elements are thoughtfully incorporated native plantings, vital pollinator habitats, and cutting-edge bioretention systems, all working in concert to enhance ecological health and climate resilience.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the reimagined park is a vibrant stage for active lifestyles and diverse recreational pursuits. From the refreshing splash pad and exhilarating pump track to the competitive basketball courts, welcoming dog park, accessible walking track, and inclusive playground, Rose Park offers an array of amenities designed to engage every age group and ability. This dynamic transformation of a cherished legacy park into a climate-adaptive and socially inclusive space profoundly illustrates the transformative power of landscape architecture, showcasing its capacity to catalyze meaningful and lasting positive changes within urban communities.

Understanding community need, the design was developed with, not for, the neighborhood, supporting and expanding existing park use while highlighting the site’s unique qualities. It prioritizes active recreation, promotes equality of opportunity, enhances site safety, and fosters a strong sense of community ownership.

Connecting with a diverse community, both culturally and across many generations of residents, the design process focused on building trust and relationships, gaining meaningful insight and understanding, clearly communicating shared values and long-term commitment, and demonstrating accountability and transparency to ensure the project remained relevant, responsive, and rooted in the lived experiences of those it serves. Public meetings like the one pictured above, were wildly popular with over 100 residents attending.

Belgian and Dutch immigrants introduced rolle bolle (krulbollen) or “Belgian Boling” and other similar sports to the area, which feature similar courts as Bocce. Shade was a critical part of the programmatic discussion in bringing the game outdoors – and for the park design in general.

Grouping activities within the larger park allowed for the greatest area of rewilded zones, concentrated use to reduce cost and neighborhood disturbance, while also allowing for different programmatic elements to make use of key features, like seating, platforms, restrooms, vegetated areas, shade, and lighting.

Let’s build better communities together
